The University of Sydney, founded in 1850, is Australia's first university. It is one of the largest universities in Australia, with over 47,000 students, including more than 10,000 international students from more than 100 different countries.

The University of Sydney has a worldwide reputation for high-quality teaching, and is consistently ranked amongst the top universities in the Asia-Pacific. It is a member of the Group of 8 (a group of Australia’s major research universities). It is one of only three Australian members of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) – a group of prestigious universities with members from Asia, the United States and South America. It is also a key member of the Academic Consortium 21, which encourages global cooperation for the benefit of higher education and world and regional society.

Location

Sydney is Australia’s most exciting city. The suburbs of Glebe and Newtown, next to the main campus, are centers of student life - full of trendy shops and cafes offering food of all types.

The central campus is five minutes from the center of the city and twenty minutes from stunning ocean beaches. The graceful historic buildings and spacious grass lawns and gardens create an atmosphere of tradition, serenity, and elegance which students find inspirational.

Academic Highlights

The University of Sydney is renowned for the high quality of its teaching and – with over 4,000 subjects to choose from - offers students the largest University subject selection in Australia. Courses combine essential theory with the latest practice - producing students with a richer understanding of their chosen subjects. They have an exceptional staff/student ratio.

Graduates are highly sought after by employers and attract the top starting salaries. Famous alumni include Australian prime ministers, Nobel Prize winners, and a host of international stars in education, arts, politics, and business.

The University of Sydney is currently ranked #2 in Australia and figures prominently in global rankings. Sydney is ranked among the world’s top 40 universities (UK Times Higher Education Supplement, October 2008), with its humanities teaching and research ranked in the top 20.

The University of Sydney consistently finishes well ahead of all other universities in the competition for Australian Research Council grants. It has the largest number of research programs and research students of any Australian university.

Extracurricular Activities

Being a University of Sydney student isn’t just about study. Becoming involved in non-academic activities at the University helps you to develop a network of friends and broaden your outlook and skills.

All campuses have their own services and facilities, including cafés, social and recreational venues, student organizations and a rich social and sporting life. Prayer facilities for all faiths are also available on campus.

The Study Abroad Program offers a ‘Buddy’ program that helps you network on Facebook before you arrive, settle in and make friends with local and international students, become informed and involved in events in and around the University. The Buddy Program has events running on a weekly basis including BBQs, bushwalks, city tours, pub nights, fancy dress parties, brunches and dinners.

Student organizations are an important part of university life. The University of Sydney Union (USU) is the oldest and largest student organization in Australia. The Union arranges a wide variety of entertainment – everything from live music to Arts festivals – and coordinates major student events like Orientation Week.

The University’s registered clubs and societies cover a wide range of interests from archery to sailboarding, from sushi to Scottish country dancing, from meditation to politics.

In addition to the social and sporting clubs, there are more than 50 international student clubs that provide support for students from all backgrounds. Societies include the Sydney University Association of Malaysian Students, the University of Sydney Indonesian Students Association, the Sydney University Muslim Students Association, the Singaporean Students Association, the University of Sydney Indian Society and many more. It’s a good idea to join as many clubs as possible in your time on campus in order to develop a network of friends and to broaden your outlook and skills.

Sydney is located in an area of outstanding natural beauty. There are many activities in the nearby region to get involved in, from walking in the Blue Mountains or in the Royal National Park to hang-gliding or whale watching at several glorious spots on the coast. The famous Hunter Valley wine region is also close by if you are in search of the perfect Pinot Noir!

From volunteering to festival-going, we challenge you to make the most of your international experience... See a sample of community involvement opportunities available in Sydney or discover your own upon arrival!

You'll get a taste of how enriching community involvement can be during your first few days in Australia on AustraLearn's Culture and Adventure Program.
