APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATE PSYCHOLOGY In Australia and New Zealand, most bachelor's degrees are three years in length with an optional fourth honours year. A bachelor's degree in psychology PLUS this honours year is almost always required for postgraduate psychology programs. During the honours year, students will participate in an extensive research project culminating in a large, publishable thesis (20,000-30,000 words or more). The students are formally trained in conducting and organizing an independent research project or study. Most North American students with bachelor's degrees in Psychology typically do not have the appropriate entry requirements to be accepted in the Australia/New Zealand postgraduate psychology programs. In addition, places for international students in any postgraduate psychology program (master’s, doctoral, postgraduate diploma) are very limited, so competition will be very high. In New Zealand, applicants don't have to apply to an organization like APS, but it's still highly competitive and international student spots are limited. Students need a psychology bachelor's degree and, ideally, a strong psychology research background. For the limited students that do receive offers, they are often accepted into the bachelor's honours year rather than the master's degree. To pursue a psychology degree in NZ, a student needs to complete three years: the two-year masters program and the one-year postgraduate diploma program. Enrolment into the Diploma program is not automatic, and with limited spaces, there is no guarantee the student will accepted.
