Imagine spending 4 weeks traveling around several of Asia's key cities while exploring Asian culture and global influence, then flying to Australia to continue your academic studies in one of Australia's outstanding universities. Or maybe you want to begin your studies in Australia and then learn a whole new perspective on your studies with six weeks in Seoul, South Korea. No matter how you match it up, combining destinations is a perfect way to maximize your abroad experience and transfer even more credit home to your university!

 

GlobaLinks Learning Abroad (formerly AsiaLearn) is excited to offer seven short-term summer programs, each one bringing a different opportunity to your doorstep. Adding one of these programs to your semester will depend on the dates of both programs, but is definitely feasible in many situations.

Korea University International Summer Campus - Seoul, South Korea - 6 weeks

Over 100 different classes are available through Korea University's International Summer Campus. Each class offers a full-semester of coursework condensed into six weeks of intensive study totaling 48 hours. No prior knowledge of Korea is necessary for enrollment and, except for Korean language classes; the medium of instruction for all courses is English. Students can take up to a maximum of three courses and each is worth 3 credits. Classes are held Monday-Thursday.
 

Classes are available in the following academic areas: Economics and Business, Humanities, Korea Studies, Sociology and Cultural Studies, Politics and International Relations, Science, Korean Language, and Fine Art/Design. This is an incredibly affordable way to take classes for credit over the summer and in a completely new location!

DURATION: 6 weeks

University of Hong Kong Summer Program - Asia as the Global Future - 4 weeks

This program is perfect for those that want to learn more about the fascinating region of Asia and the impact the region has on our world's future. The course consists of a variety of lectures, seminars, and field trips around Hong Kong and to Macau (3 days), Shanghai and Hangzhou (1 week), and Seoul (1 week). Instruction is in English. Topics covered include Business and Economic Development in Asia, China’s International Relations, Democratisation in Asia, Developments in West Asia, Human Rights in Asia, India and South Asia, Popular Culture in Asia, Olympics 2008, The United States and Asia, and more.

Summer APU Gateway Program in Japan - 8 weeks

Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU) offers an intensive 8-week Japanese Language Program which includes English-taught academic courses in Asia Pacific Studies and Business. It also includes cultural activities aimed to expand students knowledge of Japanese and Asia Pacific cultures while deepening intercultural understanding.

The program features:

  • Intensive beginner’s to intermediate Japanese language courses (Twelve 95-minute classes per week.)
  • Academic courses in English (up to three courses)
  • APU Buddies (participants paired with local students)
  • Activities on and off campus such as tea ceremony and weekend homestay
  • Overnight field trip to Nagasaki
  • Optional tours and activities (additional fee)

Asian Perspective: Learn Mandarin and Uncover Southeast Asia in Singapore - 6 weeks

Mandarin is the most widely spoken language in the world. In fact, it is the native language of one out of five people in the world. As more and more international corporations cover grounds in China, being able to speak this increasingly important language is definitely an asset. Where is the best place to learn Mandarin without feeling like a fish out of water? In Singapore, of course, where you can learn with ease in a bilingual environment.

Embark on a 6-week summer program learning Mandarin, an increasingly important language in this century, and explore Southeast Asia in one of the region’s leading nation-cities – Singapore. In this program, you will attend a robust and fun 100 hours of basic Mandarin curriculum. Upon completion, you will have learned the basics in conversational, reading and writing skills that are applicable in modern social context. In addition, you will uncover the diversity and richness of Chinese and Southeast Asian cultures through films, documentaries, seminars, field trips and hands-on workshops.

This program is tailored to undergraduate students of any discipline who wish to learn Mandarin and gain valuable insights into Southeast Asia during their summer break. No prior knowledge of the Mandarin language is required.

HKU Summer School in Social Science Research Methods (Postgraduate) - 2 weeks
University of Hong Kong’s graduate summer program is designed to expose postgraduate students to advanced methodologies for conducting social science research. Covering both qualitative and quantitative techniques, the course will offer graduate students a unique opportunity to meet leading scholars in their area, to develop professional networks and to broaden their set of research skills. During these four weeks, students will also be exposed to a wide range of topics related to China and Asia from within the social sciences, humanities, and economics. Instruction is in English.


DATES: late July to early August 

DURATION: 2 weeks (Occasionally offered for as a 4-week course)
GREAT FOR: Any student interested in graduate studies in the social sciences. Participants must have completed an undergraduate degree with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5.

Malaysia - Swinburne University of Technology-Sarawak Elective Plus Summer

Programs - 4 weeks

Swinburne University of Tecnology-Sarawak offers a 4-week summer sessions designed to bring local and international students together to broaden the international outlook of participants. Students can choose from a range of classes available in the fields of business, information technology, and multimedia. Field trips within the city of Kuching, Sarawak, or other parts of Malaysia are included to compliment the academic content of the summer program. Instruction is in English.

DATES: late June to late July

DURATION: 4 weeks
GREAT FOR: Business, IT, and multimedia majors who have completed at least one year of college credit and have earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.

World Campus International - Japan -2 to 7 weeks

In partnernship with the Japanese non-profit organization, World Campus International, Inc., AsiaLearn offers an opportunity to take part in a unique educational program with participants from around the globe with World Campus – Japan. With this program, you have a chance to gain international experience as well as increase your personal and professional networks all in the authentic backdrop of Japanese culture, politics and business.

While on tour, participants stay about one to two weeks in each partnering Japanese community. Educational themes are arranged as the foundation of learning in each city. During these discussions, you are given an opportunity to broaden your learning not only from guest speakers, but also by sharing your own experiences with other class members as well. You will be asked to come prepared to share your culture including national, political, religious views, etc. as well as be open to other perspectives. As a complement to the discussions, hands-on interactive activities in local communities act to deepen ones understanding as well.

 

DATES/DURATION: Summer and Spring options available from 2 to 7 weeks in duration.
DEADLINE: Summer - May 31; Spring - Jan. 15

GREAT FOR: Any one over the age of 18 with an interest in global citizenship, international business, and/or professional development. There will be a phone interview process to determine acceptance.
