Environmental and Natural Resources Degree Programs at James Cook University

James Cook University’s situation is unique for the study of science and the environment. In addition to our global reputation, JCU’s Cairns and Townsville campuses enjoy easy access to two World Heritage listed regions – the Great Barrier Reef and the ancient rainforests of the Wet Tropics – plus dry tropic environments, savanna and wetlands. The Faculty also works closely with local industries to research issues specifically relevant to the tropics.

The Faculty of Science and Engineering’s expertise, facilities and research successes in the study of these environments are world renowned, as shown by some of our rankings:

  • in the top 3 in the world in fields of research in ecology and environment, plant and animal sciences and geosciences
  • ranked first in the world for citations in the field of coral reef ecology
  • top 5% of the world’s universities for studies in disaster management, marine biology, ecology and environment
