| At the University of Adelaide, you have the opportunity to study as part of a vibrant group of students in the areas of earth and environmental science and the management of natural resources. Programs are offered in geology, geophysics, geosciences, marine biology, ecology, evolutionary biology, natural resources and landscape science. The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences has strategically placed field stations on islands, on coasts and inland to promote teaching and field research. Teaching staff have links to key environment, conservation and wildlife organisations, government agencies and the mineral and petroleum industry. PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Students have the option of enrolling in a Bachelor of Science and then majoring in one or two areas such as geology, geophysics, environmental geoscience, biology, ecology, marine biology, entomology, wildlife, and spatial information. Students can also enrol in a named degree such as: - Bachelor of Science (Marine Biology)
This program is all about the largest and most diverse ecosystem on the planet - the sea. Whilst many students undertake training in tropical seas, most employment opportunities are in temperate (Antarctic to sub-tropical) seas. Most of Australia’s population lives on temperate coasts, and we prepare graduates for work on these coasts by demonstrating the problems and needs facing marine industry and conservation. The world's longest east-west coastline runs through South Australia and is a global 'hot spot' for marine biodiversity. This coast faces the Southern Ocean and the Great Australian Bight, which has 120 islands, two massive gulfs, and an astonishing diversity of marine life. Our students get to swim with some of the planet’s most awesome creatures; seadragons, spawning aggregations of giant-cuttlefish, singing whales and expect visits from playful seals & dolphins. - Bachelor of Science (Evolutionary Biology)
Evolutionary Biology involves the study of information contained in living plants and animals and their fossils to determine how they evolved. The program, which provides access to SA Museum staff and collections, is unique in South Australia, and is designed to deliver internationally competitive training - Bachelor of Science (Natural Resources)
Students interested in helping to save the planet should consider this program, which provides an understanding of how science relates to the sustainable use of the environment in a uniquely Australian context. Students learn about the systems and processes associated with the ecological management of the natural resources of land, soil and water and will have the opportunity to develop skills in surveying resources, integrated resource planning and monitoring, re-vegetation and landscape restoration. Field Trips Many courses have field work components offering outdoor experiences in outback areas, on mining and exploration sites, on Kangaroo Island and along our diverse coastline. Examples of 2009 field trips include: - 8 day field trip to spectacular localities in the central and southern Flinders Ranges examining the geology of this famous region
- field camps to natural settings such as Kangaroo Island, Middleback Station, the outback, and the Yorke Peninsula.
| Bachelor of Environmental Policy and Management This program is offered by the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Students will learn about the important factors of environmental change and develop strategies, policy, and planning skills to effectively manage environmental issues at local, national and global levels. Areas covered include urban biodiversity, conservation and restoration, coastal development, water resource use, global environmental change and ecotourism. Other courses consider the role of environmental politics in recognising and resolving environmental problems and the relevance of environmental ethics to environmental action. Courses are also offered in environmental impact assessment, environmental information systems, social science research techniques and other related disciplines.
