Psychology Programs APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR AUSTRALIAN GRADUATE PSYCHOLOGY In order to apply for a postgraduate psychology program (honours year, postgraduate diploma, master’s, and doctorate) in Australia, your undergraduate and/or graduate program must be assessed by the Australian Psychological Society (APS). The APS is recognized by the Australian government as the official body in Australia that assesses psychology qualifications gained overseas or locally. This requirement is mandatory as it will determine the level of program, in which you will enrol. The APS assessment process generally takes 6-8 weeks and it costs about $500 AUD. To learn more about the process and to download an application, please visit http://www.psychology.org.au/membership/qualifications/. The APS will assess the undergraduate and/or graduate degree qualifications you received, not your actual academic performance. Even if your program is approved by APS, it does not guarantee admissions into a university's program. Note: GlobaLinks Learning Abroad will not be able to help you apply for APS assessment, but once you receive the results we can help you apply for the specific degree programs at the universities. Pathways Into Master of Psychology Programs In Australia, most bachelor’s degrees are three years in length with an optional fourth honours year. During the honours year, students will participate in an extensive research project culminating in a large, publishable thesis (20,000-30,000 words or more). The students are formally trained in conducting and organizing an independent research project or study. A bachelor's degree in psychology PLUS this honours year is almost always required for postgraduate psychology programs. Most North American students with bachelor's degrees in Psychology typically do not have the appropriate entry requirements to be accepted for direct entry into the master’s level psychology programs even with a North American honours degree. However, the APS assessment will make the ultimate decision on your eligibility. It is likely that the results of the APS assessment will require you to complete either an honours year or postgraduate diploma, both of which will count as a pre-requisite to the master’s.
