With numerous centres of research excellence, strong postgraduate research programmes, particular strengths in tourism and economics research, and close engagement with the business world, the School also takes pride in its many contributions to the community. Business education at Otago is at the cutting edge of business theory and practice, and as an added bonus, School of Business lecturers are regularly recognised with teaching awards. Business students have 24/7 access to the purpose built Commerce Building, home to the academic departments and computer laboratories. The School of Business maintains close relationships with business leaders. For example, the Visiting Executive Programme (VEP) has been designed to bring leading national and international executives to the School to give lunchtime seminars to students. In 2009, VEP speakers have included the Hon Bill English, New Zealand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, and Mr Tim Gibson, CEO New Zealand Trade and Enterprise.
