At Victoria University of Wellington, the School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences within the Faculty of Science offers teaching and research programmes in Geography, Geology and Geophysics and is associated with the Antarctic Research Centre. The School’s academic staff and students share a wide range of interests in the science of the deep earth, the earth's surface and atmosphere, the environment and people's interaction with it, together with the geography of economic, social and cultural development. Undergraduate and graduate programmes are offered in Geology, Geophysics and Geography, which includes Environmental Studies and Development Studies along with graduate programmes in Physical Geography. Most courses contain practical laboratory and field work components. Strong postgraduate programmes with opportunities for involvement in research projects of national and international significance, attract students from all over the world. WHAT SETS THIS PROGRAM APART The School has purpose-built teaching and research laboratories and facilities, sophisticated computing amenities, and other programme-specific resources and equipment. Collaboration with researchers in organisations outside the School, the University, and New Zealand, contributes to a stimulating study environment. Situated in Kelburn Campus, the School overlooks Wellington’s spectacular harbour landscape and its dynamic cityscape. Research in the School has been categorised into groups referred to as Research Clusters, reflecting the fact that most research is multi-disciplinary. The following clusters exist within the School: Earth Surface Processes; Economic Geography and Social Inequality; Environmental Sustainability; Globalisation and Development; Natural Hazards; Paleoclimate; Social Theory and Spatial Praxis; Tectonics; Climate Change.
