Preparing for study abroad as a graduate-level student is significantly different from preparations made by undergraduate students, particularly at the onset. Students wishing to study abroad as a graduate student should be in contact with our degree program team.
The below steps will often take a considerable amount of time to complete. We recommend potential postgraduate study abroad students begin the process 6-8 months prior to the desired commencement of studies.
Prior to applying to a university/program, the following pertinent steps must be completed, in the order in which they are noted:
1. First consult with your academic advisor and/or university Registrar, to confirm transfer credit will be accepted.
Transfer credit at the graduate level is not as readily accepted by North American universities, based on the following:
- North American masters programs are very often tightly packaged and/or branded
- There are few, if any, opportunities to undertake elective classes
- A North American masters program is typically half the length of study of a bachelor program
** When selecting classes, please be certain to select classes offered only in the intake for which you wish to study: Semester 1 (February/March – June); Semester 2 (July – November)**
3. Confirm the specific classes you have selected will transfer to your home institution, again speaking with your academic advisor and/or university Registrar.
4. Submit the following to us:
- Full & complete, official undergraduate transcripts.
- If your undergraduate transcripts do not explicitly acknowledge
1) that a degree was conferred
2) the degree conferred and
3) the date on which the degree was conferred, please also submit a notarized copy of your diploma.
- Complete (to-date), official graduate transcripts
- The list of classes in which you wish to enroll at the host university, including class title, class code and semester.
5. Upon receipt of the above, we will submit the documents and class selections to the chosen university’s admissions office.
The specific university faculty will review the documents and class selections and advise if a postgraduate study abroad student would be accepted into the faculty and within the selected classes. Admission is granted on a case-by-case, individual basis at the sole discretion of the faculty at the host university.
6. If the faculty advises of acceptance, then you will be required to apply for admission to the university on a university-specific application (as provided by us) as well as any additional materials as specified by the faculty.
Should you apply for admission to the university, an outcome should be quickly received based upon the completion of the above steps.
