FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS FOR GRADUATE ENTRY MEDICAL SCHOOL PROGRAMS

MCAT Details

What are the MCAT requirements?

The minimum MCAT requirement is an 8/8/M/8. If you do not meet this minimum requirement you will not be eligible to apply to the MBBS programs at Sydney, Melbourne, Monash, Melbourne, Western Australia, or Griffith. If you are below the minimum requirement in any section you will need to re-sit the exam prior to the application deadline to meet the minimum requirement or your application will not be considered at any of the universities listed above.

If your score is below the 8/8/M/8 minimum please contact our office as you may be eligible to apply to Wollongong, Queensland, and Deakin.

What date do I need to sit the MCAT by?

Most application deadlines are in June so you will want to sit the MCAT no later than early May to ensure that your scores are available prior to the deadline. If your scores are not available by the application deadline you will need to contact the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad office when they become available to see if there are any programs still accepting late applications at the time your scores are released. The very latest that universities will take applications is October 31st, but only if international student spaces are still available. If spaces are no longer available by the time your MCAT scores are released, you will need to wait and apply the following spring for next available intake.

Can I sit the MCAT more than once?

Yes, you can sit the MCAT as many times as necessary to meet the minimum 8/8/M/8 requirement. The universities will be able to see all of your scores but you will only be assessed on the best score that meets the requirement. The other test results will not have an effect on your application outcome.

I sat the MCAT a few years ago. Can I use those scores?

MCAT scores written prior to January 2010 will not be accepted for the February 2013 intake.

How do I submit my MCAT scores with my application?

You will provide your AAMC ID and MCAT verification code to the GlobaLinks Learning Abroad office. The verification code will not become available until your scores are released. The verification code is a 16 digit code that appears like this: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX. Once GlobaLinks Learning Abroad receives your AAMC ID and verification code, we print off your official scores in our office and add them to your file.

Can I apply now without my MCAT scores and then forward my scores as soon as they’re available?

The only university that accepts early applications without MCAT scores is the University of Wollongong. However, if you apply early to Wollongong without scores, your scores must be available by the June 3rd deadline. For all other universities you must have your MCAT scores in order for your application to be assessed. You are welcome to complete all of the application forms and submit those to GlobaLinks Learning Abroad prior to your MCAT scores being released. We will keep everything on file until your scores are available and once we have them we will forward each of your applications on for assessment.

GPA Details

What is the minimum GPA required to apply?

Applicants need to have a minimum GPA of 70% (roughly a 2.7 on a 4.0 scale) in order to apply. Some universities will assess your GPA based on the last three years of undergraduate study and others will factor in all years of undergraduate study. If you are around the 70% average and meet the minimum MCAT requirement we strongly encourage you to submit an application.

The University of Melbourne has a slightly higher GPA requirement and successful applicants will typically have a GPA of 85% or higher.

How will the university calculate my GPA?

All of the universities will use the grading scale provided on the back of your official transcripts to determine your GPA.

I’m completing or have completed graduate studies. Will the universities assess these grades as well?

Each of the universities will take any studies completed since high school into consideration so they will take both your undergraduate and graduate studies transcripts. However, assessment will primarily be based on your undergraduate degree.

I didn’t meet the minimum GPA requirement as an undergraduate student but did really well in my graduate studies. Can I still apply?

Yes, if your undergraduate GPA is below the minimum requirement and your graduate GPA meets the minimum requirement and you’ve met the 8/8/M/8 MCAT requirement we encourage you to apply.

Pre-Requisite Information

Do any of the medical school programs have pre-requisite course requirements?

Yes, the University of Melbourne requires applicants to have a semester of each at the second year level or higher in anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. Information on Melbourne's pre-requisite requirements can be found online at http://sc.mdhs.unimelb.edu.au/prerequisites. If you need your courses pre-approved, you can submit the pre-requisite assessment form to our office along with your course descriptions and we will be happy to forward them to Melbourne for you.

At this time, the University of Melbourne is the only university that has pre-requisite requirements.

How many transcripts do I need to submit to apply through GlobaLinks Learning Abroad?
