| WHAT MAKES JAMES COOK UNIVERSITY UNIQUE The School of Education at JCU has been training teachers since the 1960s. It offers undergraduate programs in early childhood, primary, secondary and physical education teaching and has developed exceptionally strong relationships with local schools and education providers. Postgraduate courses offer practising teachers opportunities to enrich their professional knowledge base; further develop their understanding of factors shaping educational participation and outcomes as well as their own professional practice; and provide pathways into higher research degrees. The Graduate Diploma of Education is a one year intensive teacher training program which qualifies graduates to teach in Australia and in most overseas countries. Research degrees (MEd Hons, EdD and PhD) provide opportunities to explore in greater depth issues of importance to the profession, to contribute to the body of professional knowledge and equip themselves for leadership at all levels. The Professional Experience Unit within the School of Education is committed to ensuring pre-service teachers have the professional experience opportunities needed to prepare them to become valued members of the teaching profession. Professional Experience forms an integral and vital component of pre-service teacher programs. It depends on effective and ethical partnerships between the university, schools, teachers, and pre-service teachers. We especially value the role of our partnership schools in supporting teacher education in North Queensland.
