| At Victoria University of Wellington, education can be studied in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences as part of a humanities degree or within the Faculty of Education. The Faculty of Education offers courses which contribute to the Bachelor of Arts. These courses are in the study of Education, Early Childhood Studies and Gender and Women’s Studies. The Faculty of Education also offers research-focused degrees such as the Master of Education and PhDs. PROGRAMS Teaching programmes are also offered by Faculty of Education at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. The Faculty’s vision is to develop highly competent teachers with a commitment to lifelong learning and the ability to make a positive difference to the lives of the children they teach. Teaching programmes include early childhood, primary or secondary education. Teacher training provides the skills needed to excel in the classroom, and teachers with degrees can pass their specialised knowledge on to future generations. Graduates who do not hold a teaching qualification, but would like to move in to a teaching career, the Faculty offers Graduate Diplomas of Teaching in Early Childhood Education, Primary and Secondary. WHAT MAKES VICTORIA UNIVERSITY OF WELLINGTON UNIQUE The Jessie Hetherington Centre for Educational Research For students interested in research, the Jessie Hetherington Centre for Educational Research creates the potential for significant and strategic educational research and development activities in the nation’s capital and in the Asia-Pacific region. The Centre focuses on research and development to enhance theoretical and evidence-based educational policy and practice from early childhood to higher education nationally and internationally. As part of its purpose and activities, the Centre strives to promote and support collaborative research and develop linkages across the disciplines and with the professions involved in the education of children and adults. Included within these activities is a particular focus on research partnerships addressing bicultural and multicultural aspects of education in New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific region. The Centre supports staff and students in developing research plans and building research capacity. The Jessie Hetherington Centre for Educational Research also works to expand and enhance the research portfolio and profile of the College.
