Medical Degrees at University of Otago

 

The University of Otago is New Zealand's first university, established in Dunedin in 1869. It is one of New Zealand's most prestigious universities, and has an international reputation for teaching and research excellence. The University of Otago has a strong reputation for excellence in the areas of human health and medical science, stemming from the establishment of New Zealand's first school of medicine in 1877. Anatomy and structural biology, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, physiology, microbiology and immunology, pharmacology and toxicology, genetics, bioethics, occupational health, public health, hazard assessment and management, sports medicine, dentistry, medicine, medical laboratory science, pharmacy, physiotherapy and physiology are some of the programs offered to students in the Division of Health Sciences.

 

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS


The Division of Health Sciences offers a range of professional degrees and diplomas in Medicine*, Dental Surgery, Medical Laboratory Science, Pharmacy, and Physiotherapy. The University also offers bachelors programs in Dental Technology and Oral Health.

The range of Health Sciences’ graduate programs available at the University enables the sharing of knowledge, information, staff and resources, the cross-fertilization of ideas and initiatives, as well as providing a vibrant and exciting environment in which to study. Otago’s Health Sciences’ researchers are extremely successful in gaining research funding from external sources, many are international leaders in their fields, and some hold executive posts in international professional bodies.


*International places in the MB ChB are only available to students enrolled as sponsored students under the terms of agreements between the University of Otago and overseas governments or institutions.

 


 

WHAT MAKES THIS PROGRAM UNIQUE

The University of Otago is the only New Zealand university to offer a degree in Dentistry, and one of only two to offer degrees in Pharmacy, Medicine and Physiotherapy. Otago also offers the benefits of a national presence with Schools of Medicine and Health Sciences located in Christchurch and Wellington, in addition to the Dunedin-based schools.
